In August, Alliance Illinois Chairman Mike Mullen and President & CEO Kelly O’Brien met with Brian Miller, joint Director of the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) College Program and the Illinois Water Resource Center, to discuss an IISG FRP for Integrated Assessment research projects. The RFP seeks project proposals that address one of four sets of needs:

  • Conducting a study of the viability of establishing a locally-sourced seafood market in downtown Chicago;
  • Developing an adaptive management framework for implementing a nutrient reduction strategy in a given watershed;
  • Assessing the value of the recreational fishery in southern Lake Michigan and suggest major impediments to further developing this fishery; and
  • Evaluating potential impacts of switching to alternative forms of energy in southern Lake Michigan watersheds.

Researchers may request up to $96,000 of federal (Sea Grant) funds. Every two federal dollars requested must be matched by at least one nonfederal dollar. Funding will be provided for 18 months beginning March 1, 2015, or the date of the award, and projects should be completed by September 1, 2016. IISG anticipates funding 3-4 projects. Proposals must be submitted by 5 p.m. CST on November 17, 2014.

In addition, over the summer O’Brien was re-appointed as a continuing IISG External Advisory Committee member. O’Brien was originally appointed to the IISG External Advisory Committee in 2012.
